MEAT the Need Christmas Food Drive

The Forrest L. Wood Crowley's Ridge Nature Center is partnering with Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry and the Helping Neighbors Food Pantry to host a Meat the Need Food Drive. Bring properly packaged, ground game meat and other canned goods and make an ornament to make a difference on December 10th from 1-3pm. Help us "Meat" the Need in Craighead County! Registration is not required for this event.

Items packed with protein are generally more expensive than canned vegetables, and those prices have only gotten higher. With this, the amount of donated items has decreased as the need has increased. While Americans consume over 326 billion pounds of protein each year, food banks only receive enough protein to represent 1% of their total distribution. Animal meat is much higher in protein and ground meat can be used in many low cost, easy recipes making it a great alternative to canned meats.

Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry (AHFH) is a community-minded program that provides venison and other wild game to those in need. Organizations, businesses, and churches of many denominations have joined hunters to transform an abundant white-tailed deer population into a renewable food source for the hungry. Their Wild Game Snack Stick program provides meat snack sticks in backpacks for children all across Arkansas. This year alone, AHFH is providing over 6,000 snack sticks to 8 schools in Craighead County. Meat donations go back into the community via food banks such as Helping Neighbors Food Pantry in Jonesboro. Monetary donations fund the processing, packaging, and distributing of the snack sticks. For more information on how to donate and their mission, you can visit ArkansasHunters.org.

The Helping Neighbors Food Pantry operates an inter-faith food pantry serving Craighead County, Arkansas residents. The pantry is managed by a board of directors comprised of representatives from its twenty-four sponsoring organizations ( a synagogue and 23 churches). Located at 501 W Highland Drive in Jonesboro, the pantry is open year round. They rely on donations from local businesses and community members and have provided more than 4.4 million pounds of food to Craighead County residents since opening its doors in 1995. For more information on their organization, you can visit helpingneighbors-craighead.org.

This workshop is free of charge due to the 1/8 cent conservation sales tax and revenue from hunting and fishing license sales. Thank  you for supporting conservation!
